Finally, thank you a solution! Bit nerve racking -half way through the uninstall the dreaded error message came back but then disappeared and lo and behold...I could connect to the network with the trios of KBs in place. Have run all the scans and nothing out of order...so huge thanks and thanks also to everyone for the suggestions. Just pleased there is such a great comunity out there for nincompoops like me!
