I support DaveH's idea and warning..
In windows 8.0 on a dell laptop with uefi, I could successfully use Ubuntu live disc to recover personal files. But that required some trial and error play with Bios then.
I dont suggest that without a technition's assistance unless you really are used with new uefi systems.
