Well now I'm not sure on that really. It's just that I thought most antivirus products check most file types, and only skip a core set of types such as text files, picture files, etc. In other words, more than just executable types are scanned by today's products. And there's no way to know what that core set of skipped file types is, unless you can get technical information on it (or somehow test).
Anyway, I do think an entry like *.xxx is valid in the exclusions list afterall, because if I try to add .xxx (without the *) the dialog will say invalid. So apparently you can't add just any old text there, it either has to be full or partial paths, or simple wildcards.
