Hi, Phiz.

I think the Symantec staffer may have been referring to the Norton Family forum, which is part of the community forums.

Why, I don't know. Maybe a typo, but you came to the right place !

A little more clarification.

You originally posted in the Norton Family board which is for a Norton product for Parental Controls. That is why Katie moved your post here, so 360 users would see it to provide help.

As your 2 current subscriptions have differing times on them, you will lose the remaining time on the one with 200+ days remaining if you convert those machines to the new Multi Device version. What I would suggest, if you want to convert to the MD version is to contact Support to see what arrangements they can make for you to convert your existing subscriptions to the Multi Device, and see if they can transfer any remaining time  to the new subscription.

Your issue will probably be best resolved by contacting Support via online chat.   www.norton.com/chat

Let us know how you get on.

Hello to you knowledgeable people.

Is Norton 360's Sonar Protection part of the Auto Protection function or a separate one?

Thanks.

Hi BarneyBear, and welcome. Here is some info from the help page regarding Sonar features.

Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response (SONAR) provides real-time protection against threats and proactively detects unknown security risks on your computer.

SONAR identifies emerging threats based on the behavior of applications. SONAR identifies threats quicker than the traditional signature-based threat detection techniques. SONAR detects and protects you against malicious code even before virus definitions are available through LiveUpdate.

Symantec recommends that your computer remains connected to Internet to get the real-time protection against threats and proactively detects unknown security risks on your computer.

SONAR automatically blocks and removes high-certainty threats. Norton Internet Security notifies you when high-certainty threats are detected and removed. SONAR provides you the greatest control when low-certainty threats are detected.

If you go to Settings/Computer/real Time Protection in the Norton UI, and click on the ? to the right of the Sonar Protection tab, it will show you the available options for this feature.

It IS part of your Automatic Protection.

Hi, sfsassz. I'm not sure why it has the Xerox adapter listed. Mine does too, but you can set your network devices to Shared or Protected on your network map, so you don't need to restrict them.

Norton 360 installer 2014 is Norton Internet Security 2014

I bought Norton 360 through Amazon, since my suscription had like 5 days remaining.

I downloaded it using Amazon's installer and succesfully completed the process on my main PC.

I have 2 more PCs as well, so I logged in into my Norton Device Manager, and clicked in "Add a device" and downloaded the installer labeled as NortonN360Downloader.exe, version is the 4.0.0.14

However, when I installed it on both the other PCs, Norton Internet Security 2014 was installed instead.

So, I don't know what's going on? Is the file on the server wrong or what?

Is that documents folder your default download location?  If so, that would explain the presence there of all of the Norton Download files.

I'm not sure what happened there, but you can log in to your Norton account and download a pre-activated copy on to each machine, or you can download from www.norton.com/latestn360 and activate with your Product Key.

If you now have NIS installed it might pay you to uninstall from Windows Control Panel, then run the Norton Removal Tool before installing N360.

When you use the Norton downloader to install the product, it normally creates a folder under "documents" called Norton.

For some reason it did not create the folder.

I can see the files that are usually in that folder:

norton360downloader.exe

n360premierupgrader...............exe

downloadinfo.txt

symcdefs.exe

2014plugin.dll

The text file has instructions on copying that folder to other computers if you need to install the product on more systems.

I have deleted the folder and it's contents wih no problems in the past.

SONAR is a component of Auto-Protect.  It can be independently disabled while still leaving the rest of the Auto-Protect features enabled.  However, turning off Auto-Protect itself will also turn off SONAR, which can only run when Auto-Protect is active.

It could be something like a printer.  Are all of your networked devices accounted for?

Thank you for your suggestion.

The first thing I did was to make the teredo tunneling pseudo interface with the Xerox adapter, Restricted, which my understanding is that in will not be able to access my computer. Correct? I have my wireless and LAN connections set to Protected.

My main concern is Security. Who is on my network using a Xerox interface. Not me.

Im surprised that anyone wouldn't be concerned seeing an unknown interface on their network.

It wasn't there prior to my NSS upgrade.

Any other ideas?

Thank You.

After each syste restore, norton support team was invovked to take my system into remote to trouble shoot it.  But they were just (blindly?) removing certain files and registry entries.  Then  again started the process of removing norton and other usual stuff.  But they were not able to prove anything.  Wheareas i was to show te difference in the performance when norton was running and norton was removed.

But my questions is not getting answered at all in this forum.  That is, whehter norton has any technical capabilities to troubleshoot the issues caused by norton.  If Norton says the issue is not caused by norton, they should be able to prove it which they are unable to.  Or just norton is a product seller and provide support only in installing and uninstalling the product and their support people are not aware of the norton product except to install and reinstall?  Because, if I mention my problem in chat, they are happy to unisntall and reinstall.  But if I specify the history the chat personal leaving the chat window even without disconnecting and without providing any information.

Don't Norton knows that, by not helping its customer, it will loose its customer base?  Ot Norton feels there are too many customer and it is the best time loose a portion?

Maybe one of your devices has an network adapter made by Xerox.

If your teathered to your android the wifi adapter is still going to show as a seperate device.

The same reason why laptops and some printers have 2 network adapters, one for LAN and one for WiFi.

In the "network security map" what Norton calls "physical address" is really the devices MAC address.

Check your android and any other devices to see if the MAC address matches one of them.

Hi,sfsassz. I looked this up, and seemingly it's to do with your Ethernet connection, and that it's a generic adapter first developed by the Xerox Corporation. This is what I found.

Ethernet, computer networking technology used in local area networks(LANs).

Ethernet was created in 1973 by a team at the Xerox Corporation’s Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC) in California.

Well, I managed to install it using the .exe located in Public Downloads on my main machine.

I don't know what happened before, but it was definetly weird, since I had N360 before as well on all 3 PCs.

BTW the Norton Toolbar still crashes FF and Chrome, I kinda gave up on that by now, better to deactivate that feature.

Norton products are installed and work flawlessly on millions of computers running several different versions of Windows all over the world.  When a problem like yours arises, it indicates an anomoly somewhere on your system.  Something about your system is different than those millions of other systems that show no problems.  It isn't easy, either in chat or on the forums, to figure out what that difference might be - you are the only person with the PC in front of you and a knowledge of its history.  If you had another AV product installed when Norton was installed, it certainly could have caused corruption of files and other issues that might persist despite reinstalling the program.  Or the cause could be something else entirely.  To answer your question, all I can offer is that on a pristine, properly configured system, Norton should work perfectly.  When you get to things in the real world, there can be cases where other programs or things that have been done to a system will cause Norton not to behave as designed, and the cause and effect is not always obvious - the trouble could be Norton, could be Windows, could be that third-party system maintenence program you installed.  If you are asking for proof that Norton is not the cause of the problem, then you are asking for proof of a negative, which is never possible.

We have seen several "mystery device" cases like yours on the forums.  In every single one of them that I am aware of the device turned out to either belong on the user's own network, or belonged to a network that the user had knowingly connected to in the past.  So despite your concerns, I am still thinking that the Xerox adapter is on one of your own devices.  If you are using WPA encryption for your wireless security, it is virtually impossible that an outsider could have accessed your network.

Hi All,

Just wanted to pop in and say I am having the exact same problem. I have even tried re-formating windows to no avail. If i leave the computer on without shutting down, after 2-3 days norton 360 is unable to scan and gives me these errors. Upon restarting the computer norton 360 scans work.

Hi owlingz, and welcome!

Quoting from this KB Article about error 8506,421:

"There is a known issue with Norton security software and the Instant Reset utility distributed on some Lenovo laptops. Symantec is working on reproducing this issue. Unfortunately, in the meantime, Symantec recommends not to install Norton products on Lenovo laptops with Instant Reset functionality"

If the above reflects your situation, you could try following what suggested in said KB and see if it fixes your issue.
