NSS Requests Prevent Sleep

I have NSS 21.2.0.38 installed. My computer often will not go to sleep. In these cases, "powercfg -requests" returns the following information. How do I stop NSS from making these requests that prevent the computer from sleeping?

Thanks,

Bob

C:\Windows\system32>powercfg -requests
DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files (x86)\Norton Security Suite\Engine\21.2.0.38\n360.exe (N360)
[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (CryptSvc)

AWAYMODE:
None.

I have been there and have reinstalled. I was wondering how to determine if NSS is blocking the internet traffic, which might then lead the program to shut itself down. If this scenario is true, stopping the blocking will allow the program to run.

You could try temporarily disabling the Smartfirewall to see if that is the issue. Right click on the 360 icon in your system tray and click Disable Smart Firewall. Choose the shortest time interval, and test your program. Remember to reset the firewall when you are done.

Hi,
I think it's going to be a matter of choice. You can change the time that NSS makes its requests to avoid the sleep period, you can change the sleep period or you can eliminate one or the other. I don't know of a way to have both at this time.

Sounds like it might make a good request for the product suggestion forum.

Keep us posted

Have you fully restarted your computer lately? I usually just use sleep/hybernate on my laptop, and occasionally it will not sleep. Restarting usually clears those requests.

Glad to hear.

Could you elaborate on what the solution is, so others may learn?

Why did I have a trojan when I use Norton 360?

My computer would not boot up this moring and has been running slow lately.  I finally got it to boot and immediately did a full scan.  It shows 2 things I am concerned with #1 It said I had Trojan.Zbot and Trojan.gen.2 - how am I getting trojans when I have Nortopn 360 running all the time?? Now that it is detected....did it6 get into my norton vault or anything I should be concerned with?

#2 why am I getting tons of " An intrusion attempt by (deleted) was blocked" - I'm glad its blocking them but they are coming in every 5 seconds - literally.  What can be done about this and cant they system block this persons ISP?

Thanks

Don't push to hard in trying to get a system (windows) to bott if it won't as it could cause more problems including on the odd occasion hardware pushed too hard.

The Trojan.gen.2  reminds me of Zeroaccess or Zekos, cidox etc.  Where Norton detects part of it, but not all of it  due to some malware working deeper in the Boot Sector, partition or other level (like the ROL.)

The intrusion prevention blocking is at times due to the sytem being infected and the infection (or more than 1) is shall we say trying to phone home on the Internet to send data or download more files etc, but Norton is blocking that.

So you could say Norton and whatever it is are at a stand off.  Some of the Rootkits and Bootkits do at times cause a non booting Windows or where Windows crashes after a certian amount of time.

That works until the computer wakes up on its own and then won't go to sleep again. Haven’t nailed down why it wakes, but suspect Norton is involved there, too.

My Norton 360 worked great for first 3 months, but now not able to enable firewall in action center. In action center, "Turn on Norton 360" >> " Yes I trust the publisher" -  does nothing. This started happening all of a sudden. No new software installed recently. I tried to uninstall, shutdown, restart & reinstall didnt help.

Samething happened to me in my last year Norton360 as well. But i dont remember how i fixed it.

Would appreciate if someone help on this.

Hi, kvignes1. Welcome. A reinstall might be in order. The Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool will replace your current copy with a clean one, in case of any corruption.   http://www.norton.com/nrnr

Please note the Before you begin paragraph at the top of the page.

After the reinstall, run Live Update until no more are found. Let us know how you go.

You could also run a Windows file scan to see if that finds any problems.

Using the Command Prompt and run as Administrator, type sfc /scannow and let it run. Note the space after sfc.

It will attempt to repair any damaged Windows files.

Hi kvignes1,

Have you tried a firewall reset?

You should also check that your system date, time and time zone are correct.

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.

Hi Dick --

Thanks for the response. I am embarrassed to ask you to lead me by the hand, but how does one

  1. "change the time that NSS makes its requests to avoid the sleep period"
  2. "change the sleep period"
  3. "eliminate one"
  4. eliminate "the other"?

I truly get lost in the NSS GUI trying to figure out what controls what.

Thanks,

Bob

sitedirector.symantec.com strange document

In my system tray there is an icon which looks like a flower (see image "ImgA" attached) which when I click produces a pop-up window. This window (see image "ImgB" attached) says: "Authentication Required, Enter user name and password for: sitedirector.symantec.com". Is this something to do with Norton or is it spyware? I've tried my Norton account password and it was rejected. Have I compromised my pc? I've run several Norton Full System Scans and also Norton Power Eraser and no problems were found.

Help!

You can see if Norton has trusted it if you open N360 > Tasks > Run Norton Insight > let that run, then at the bottom of the UI you should see a link to Check a Specific File.  You could check it in a few days.
