Hi Dick,
I still dont understand why I have had Norton 360 for years - and pay for a new version every year - yet I got 2 trojans. I believe I finally got it removed but should I be using another virus protection product?

Hi Kat,
I've been using Norton products since about 1984 and I have problems from time to time. I have found that there is no security product that will protect you 100% of the time from 100% of the threats that are being released by the thousands daily. I have also found that I can't buy better protection than that provided by a current Norton security product.
I also keep an on demand, free scanner on my desktop to use at least weekly as a second opinion scan. I am also aware of the free sites that have trained volunteers staffing them that can help me when the hole I've gotten into is deeper than I can dig my way out of. they are

There are several different types of infections. The ones that can harm / destroy data / programs are the ones that Norton concentrates on. There are others that are more a serious PITA that are not destructive. Norton gets some, but not all of these. Programs like Malwarebytes Antimalware and Superantispyware seem to focus more on those types of infections. There are also more serious tools for cleaning systems that should only be used under the direction of a trained removalist [the folks that staff the sites listed above].
If you know exactly what you're doing then you can clean your system, if not then it's best to go quickly to one of the listed sites and get assistance. Blindly trying any / all of the available tools without knowing how can do much more damage than good. [end of soap box mode]
Stay well and surf safe
I had another 3038,104 tonight, dashing my hopes that another NRnR.exe re-installation would do the trick. I went into Norton Chat and got remote medical assistance for my installation and, after trying all the usual things, the tech did some things that weren't on the screen and then assured me that the problem was gone. Probably due to "bonded locksmith" type information, he didn't disclose what was done. If this holds for four days, we will declare the solution to be going to Norton remote support.
Watch this space on June 7. If I don't get another 3038,104 by then, I will post a victory message and declare a solution.
Hi,
I tried http without the "s", it just reverts back to https.
There seems to be something that's not allowing the web page to fully load. I've run scans, there are no viruses or malware.
The site loads for me if I use SendOfJive's link.
Have you tried clearing your browser's cache and cookies before going there?
If you don't use Adobe Shockwave Player, you should absolutely uninstall it. Security blogger Brian Krebs recently posted about the dangers of having Shockwave on your system:
This author has long advised computer users who have Adobe‘s Shockwave Player installed to junk the product, mainly on the basis that few sites actually require the browser plugin, and because it’s yet another plugin that requires constant updating. But I was positively shocked this week to learn that this software introduces a far more pernicious problem: Turns out, it bundles a component of Adobe Flash that is more than 15 months behind on security updates, and which can be used to backdoor virtually any computer running it.

Are you using HTTPS Everywhere or something similar to force https?
Wow!
Thanks for that warning, SOJ.
Glad I could put your mind to rest.
I thought that might get your attention, Krusty.
Even though I removed Shockwave years ago, I read that blog post with stunned amazement, myself. Yikes!
Hey all I just came over from the NIS section. A couple of questions.
Is the UI for 360 supposed to be 4 luminesant yellow boxes and a white background? The options are faintly grey. Is this correct? Not really a problem, but is really ugly.
I also bought the virus removel service and I was wondering how this works. There is not any phone number to call for the service.
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for the help guys it seems to have corrected itself although I'm not exactly sure what fixed it.
Note: ( F4E's advice to run sfc /scannow ) when this is run windows insists on having the XP install disc and its difficult to cancel. I do have the disc but its misplaced somewhere as its been so long since I used it. Maybe advise the next person to have the disc ready first before running it.
You mean this?
I have made a suggestion in the Product Suggestion board for a new GUI. Feel free to add your voice.
This might help with your other enquiry - http://us.norton.com/nortonlive/spyware-virus-removal.jsp - It's small, but on the top right hand side is a link to Contact the removal service.
Yep. That.
I've done further testing and discovered that the problem is with MBAM, not Norton. When MBAM is uninstalled, SOS Online runs fine. So, that's an issue for another forum. I did use the firewall reset option in Norton, but as things evolved, that wasn't really the source. Because it is not a Norton issue as far as I can tell I'm closing this request. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Bilko:
Instructions for using the Norton Virus Removal Service are posted here and include the toll-free numbers for regions where this service is currently available.
